Besides out of print book collection, there are still many other marketing strategies that BKS could do, but Amazon couldn't. BKS should try to take more advantages of their local bookstores, they should come up with more integrated strategies to link their 6th largest web hits(people) to retail stores. There are still many things that cannot do just through Internet.

I have attended many activities held in BKS local book stores, such as BKS invites authors to their stores and have a meeting with readers...etc. One concrete way BKS can do is linking their local book stores events with on-line sales. Gives free event tickets to web buyers depends on where they live, or gives coffee coupon. With a good Management Information System, It is not too difficult to implement this. A book store is not just selling books, it could have more values added on it. Every hit on barnesandnoble.com could generate more revenues if BKS knows how to guide it back to retail book stores. BKS should make use of their competitive advantages, not just try to catch Amazon's wind.

What I want to say is BKS is fully capable of becoming #1 in both web and retail markets. But it depends on how smart the BKS marketing people are.
