Sure, I've heard of the dead cat bounce.

We'll see in a week or so whether the cat called Internet is dead or not. Let's see if the earning reports (like MSFT today) will make any difference...

Definitely a "dead cat bounce," definitely.

The difference between now and last fall, auric and co., was that then we were the only ones who knew this was all madness. Relatively few people knew what a tulip was. Now everyone does, and the mania is the stuff of cocktail-party banter, and "Tom Tomorrow" cartoons (check out this week's edition in your local papers, re. priceline.com and William Shatner).

I'm sticking with my 4/28 pick, Auric, but changing my reason (I have two more wishes, don't I?). Upon reflection, I think the catalyst (Guess #2, to be precise) will be whispers about inflation having been seriously understated due to "technical errors" (fat chance, but that's what will be said) in the first quarter of 1999.

I don't know where you are, Auric, but housing prices everywhere are soaring, not least because there's so much funny money floating around chasing hard value, i.e. real estate. Skyrocketing housing prices should be giving us a 7% inflation rate, minimum, all by itself...

We are living in topsy-turvy universe, where (as the NY Observer says in its IPO cover story this week) clueless 20-somethings get megarich over night, where GNET goes up 30 points a day, where people are arguing whether YHOO or LCOS has more page views despite the fact that page views have absolutely no connection with revenues, let alone profits.

Ahh, but turvy is about to take over topsy, Auric. I'll await the judges verdict.

Good luck to all, and good night.
