I was born and raised in Buckhead, less than ten miles from Decatur. My dad was an Atlanta policeman. I'm quite sure that all facilities in that area were integrated, if not by choice at least by law. This is not the claim of some incensed southern cracker either. Through my mother I am one half Muskokee (Creek) tribe, Wind clan, so I don't have any axe to grind defending racism. I also have a certain insight in what it is like for a people to suffer genocide and ethnic cleansing. My people, the Creek, were deported along with the Cherokee, to Oklahoma on the "Trail of Tears". That is, at least, the four out of ten that survived the journey. My ancestors were some of the few that managed to escape this "cleansing" by remaining to themselves in two remote mountain valleys on the Ga/Tenn border. My mother's parents were the first generation to move out of the mountains, when they came to Atlanta in the 1920's.

I am proud of my Creek heritage and proud of my Celtic (Irish) heritage from my father's side, but my image of myself, my own identity has always just been as an American, not Euro-American or Native American, just American. Much as I assume, many of the ethnic Albanians in Kosovo considered themselves Yugoslavian.
