Of course it's only an guess, but the speed of the collapse on no news and the quick rebound also on no news indicates that it was probably some urgency in the selling but the urgency was over soon. It takes some fairly big money to move the market this way, and it took place in an environment of institutional sector shift. There's always some MM who suddenly realizes he is thinking different from his peers and rushes to correct the situation. He does this by selling his most profitable, most liquid investment. (In this case EMC) The punishment to a MM who wanders too far from his peers can be loss of their job. This institutional lemming behavior is sometimes fairly obvious, and enabled me to load up within a very few minutes of the bottom last Fall. It doesn't become obvious very often, may not last very long, but when it does it's easy money.
