Finding politics incomprehensible most of the time, I will only hazard a wild guess based on nothing.
Wouldn't the role of us as Policeman of the World be more of a self-appointment? Do other people really want us to commit to this? Or only when it serves their agenda? We seem frequently to be hated for our powerful position and any interference.
And can we afford to be the world's policeman? If we try to take care of everyone, seems to me we could take care of nothing well, including ourselves. And if we did this, could we do it with only a professional army?
I admit I probably wouldn't be crazy about the boys being policemen either.

But I think the armies should be volunteers, not conscripts. Like cops. Why not? I really wouldn't have minded my tax money going to save the people in Tianamen Square.

I couldn't disagree more. People always think it's a good idea to send someone else into war, but it focuses their minds remarkably when it's their own flesh and blood who will get killed or maimed. The cavalier way that people advocate "sending in the troops" has always made me bridle. I'm for universal service up to the age of 55. This will force the arm-chair gung-ho battalions to think long and hard about sending the army all over the globe in order to salve their feelings after a hard night of watching atrocities on CNN. Send Chelsea, send Albright's kids. Send Stephanopoulos. Let the yuppie vermin walk point.
