I am doing a little comparison shopping (DSL vs. @Home) for my parents. I don't know if ATHM is available for them yet, but USWEST has DSL. I was really surprised at how much more expensive DSL is vs. what I pay for my @Home service. @Home: $150 onsite installation includes ethernet card. When DOCSIS is real this should be signicantly less - or zero. $40 per/mo 24x7, includes marginal ISP (no domain hosting, etc.) I wont make any outragous througput claims - I know i don't get 10Mbs, but it feels as fast as a T1 at the office. DSL: $110 one-time activation fee $100 one-time for PCI DSL modem $149.95 for onsite installation $40 per/mo 24x7, 256kbps, does not include ISP $20 per/mo ISP. Choose your own. DSL seems much more expensive, both on the installation and on a per-month basis. Plus, you have to deal with USWorst. I don't have any real bias either way - I want the fastest, cheapest, most reliable connection. I have been using @Home for 8 months with one short outage - but I would drop them like a hot rock if something really better comes along. It seems like @Home is more attractive than DSL from a pricing perspective. How is DSL better? It also seems more complex - a seperate ISP, 15,000 feet from the central office (do most people event know what a CO is?) etc. etc. -- Jake
