Big Board Order-Delivery System
Slowed AOL Investors on Monday

By a WALL STREET JOURNAL Staff Reporter

NEW YORK -- Some investors who changed their minds on the stock of
America Online Inc. Monday were stymied by delays experienced in the
New York Stock Exchange's electronic order-delivery system.

The wild trading in AOL triggered an
exceptional number of requests to cancel or
change orders already entered. A queue
developed, and as a result some of those "cancel or replace" messages
weren't received until after the original order had been executed, an
exchange official said. He said the queue wasn't cleared until after the
closing bell.

The official couldn't estimate the length of the delays or how many orders
were erroneously executed as a result.

The Big Board traded 32.6 million shares of AOL Monday, the
second-highest overall volume day for the exchange. An additional 23
million shares of AOL traded on regional exchanges and at broker-dealer
members of the National Association of Securities Dealers.

The official said such delays have happened only once or twice before. To
prevent a recurrence, he said "we've devoted more horsepower to that
application process [and] we're looking at some longer-term solutions."
