TO THE THREAD, RE A@P in KOSOVO ------ I just can't think about stocks today. I have just posted the following email to everyone in my company. This situation is horrific, and I do not think Anthony has been able to speak fully about it. Meanwhile, think about how you can magnify the multiplier effect. ----------------------------------------------------------------- (To Everyone (company I work for) Friends, I'm sure many of you have been feeling the same sense of despair, outrage and helplessness in the face of the unfolding tragedy in Kosovo. As a child, I met some of my relatives who had numbers tattooed on their arms; I grew up always believing that the world had been finally rid of the barbarism this symbol represented. Now the nightmare is unfolding again before our eyes; once the full news gets out this will prove to be far worse than is reported even now. Besides the mass executions, mass rapes, mass confiscation of papers and property, tens of thousands of refugees are being marched across snowy mountains, essentially left to die. A friend of mine, Mr. Anthony Elgindy, a person I admire greatly for his extraordinary humanitarian efforts, particularly when there are children involved, is in Macedonia right now and is reporting the situation is way, way worse than we see on CNN. He probably cannot say everything he would, because it is not safe to do so. But he is travelling with a TV crew, and will be posting video, interviews, and stories to the net as he can. The story of this unfolding catastrophe will be told, sooner or later. Sadly, real, on-the-ground humanitarian efforts on the part of the US are not in evidence, and although most European countries are managing something, it is crumbs in comparison to the need. Anthony has personally identified at least one organization that is functioning, though. It is a branch of Mother Teresa's; the people are working without salary, and he has seen their great work firsthand. I can say with authority that Anthony is someone who knows the value of a dollar, and his recommendation carries the highest credibility, believe me. Contact info for them is at the bottom of this message. Every dollar that goes to them directly provides needed supplies and services to refugees in Macedonia. (Sadly, the Macedonian government has been part of the problem, rather than the solution, and is increasing the suffering of the refugees greatly.) I am preparing to wire funds to this organization today. I do not want to wait for the elapsed time for mail delivery, not to mention check-clearing, will take, in terms of lending some support to the refugees. If any of you are so moved, you can do so yourselves, or contact me to go in on my fund wire. I can see national attention shifting to the tragedy in Colorado; while understandable, I fear our fickle media will cause massive distraction from the catastrophic genocide now unfolding. I feel terrible about the shooting, but the horror in the Balkans is on another scale entirely. If you would like some incentive, I will personally match every dollar you wish to give. Anthony has already agreed to match every dollar I give, so your leverage is now 3:1. Thanks, Alan (I am currently trying to establish the correspondent bank ID of the US bank that would enable a direct wire transfer. The above info has not been adequate to arrange wire transfer yet, but I'm working on it.) [Humanity Organization contact info: See A@P email, not repeated here]
