Afrikaners present
homeland plans

Afrikaners in South Africa have handed President
Mandela a set of proposals for the location of an
independent homeland.

The proposals were drawn up by a special body the
Volkstaat Council, which was formed after the first
multi-racial elections in 1994.

Mr Mandela said many Afrikaners were traumatised by
their loss of power.

He said he would discuss the homeland proposals with
the deputy president, Thabo Mbeki.
