Wayne, one of the problems I believe you'd encounter with trying to buy puts on a stock that has had a parabolic rise is that the volatility premiums would be outrageous. Shorting some of these names overnight can cause lack of sleep, premature gray hair, and stomach ulcers. I prefer to stick to the lesser known names and obvious pump and dump schemes when I short sell. I look for negative earnings, no analyst coverage or coverage by one or two boutique firms, a history of failure in previous business ventures, the selling of junk equity (aka toxic convertibles), and stock promotion with pie in the sky promises. My current favorite which meets just about all these criteria is CYOE. The company made a big splash in 1996 as Diana Corp when it folded up it's failed meatpacking biz and moved into network switches. The networkers were the 'nets of the day at the time. The stock was delisted from the NYSE, traded on the bulletin board, and was subsequently resurrected with a listing on the Nasdaq.
