DD on PNET: O/S: 16M Float: 3.5M PNET has developed a piece of software called Direct Connect . The way this thing works is as follows: Lets say you are shopping on the net.... You get to a website and you want to buy something there or have questions. You double click on the Direct Connect icon on your desktop; the program disconnects you from your ISP and dials the number for the company who's web page you are on. You pick up the phone, place your order or ask your questions... in the meantime, you can still use the "back/forward" buttons on your web browser to go through as you are on the phone. When you are done, you click on disconnect and the program re-connects you automatically to your ISP. Why is this a neat thing? 1) Most households still only have one phone line. When you are connected to the I-net, you obviously can't use the phone. 2) Most people are still hesitant to order via credit card over the internet. They would still rather use the phone. How is PNET going to make money on this? Each business that decides they want to use Direct Connect will pay PNET a $500 a year licensing fee. Additionally these businesses will have a link to download the consumer version of the Direct Connect software on the business's web page. The consumer version is free . The program is small (340K) and is easy to set up. I tried it yesterday. At this time PNET is working feverishly to continue to improve the software and add more "bells and whistles". During the show they did recently, they passed out over 20,000 copies of the program. The program seems to be well received. The only competition to Direct Connect at this point is still internet telephony which still leaves something to be desired with regard to quality and reliability. A PR campaign in addition to the contacts developed at the show, will be used to promote the product. Patrick at PNET told me yesterday that they have a backlog of news releases regarding Direct Connect and the company. See: phon-net.com and phon-net.com Also: bcdonline.com >>>> Be advised that this page as well as Phon-net's page is still pretty much under construction with new developments. Another thing that PNET is working on is a phone system that will turn the phone into a yellow pages search engine. It works like this: Lets say you are on business in Atlanta, GA. You get to your hotel room and decide that you want to eat Chinese food that night... You pick up the phone and dial the 1-800 number and connect with PNET's phone server thing. You then go through the menu and select restaurants, then Chinese... The "server" will return the top ten Chinese restaurants with phone numbers and addresses of the restaurants. If you have a laptop, you can do the same thing... only this way it (the server) will send you detailed instructions (graphically) on how to get to each restaurant. Also, if you have fax capability, it will fax you the info. This system is close to production right now... but not "online yet". THIS IS NOT A REC TO BUY PNET. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN DD. I OWN 10K. Tom
