Soup,

Thank you for the insights in AAPL vs. RNWK. There are some on this thread, Pruguy in particular, who are extremely interested in the strategy behind RNWK. Not just Cesare.

PS> You seem the only one on this thread interested in discussing the RNWK's technology and corporate strategy rather than it's ebullient stock price.

Hey, easy there on Real ... just because Glaser doesn't rely on TV commercials spouting "She comes in colors" doesn't mean you have to pick on RNWK ...

:-)

Next/Openstep OS originally ran on Intel hardware. Much of the work converting it has been to optimize it for the PowerPC platform.

Well, yeah, that's sort of my point. They just put a lot of effort into making it work on PowerPC for the express purpose of making PowerPC servers move off the shelf.

My main point is that AAPL is a hardware company that at the end of the day moves boxes, not QT.

Reuters: Apple said that at the show, three computer companies, International Business Machines Corp., Silicon Graphics Inc. and Sun Microsystems Inc., are demonstrating server versions of QuickTime, running on their hardware, in Apple's booth.

''They can come in and make a (version of) server (software) for any platform they want,'' said Phil Schiller, vice president of worldwide product marketing at Apple.

Apple has made partnership announcements like this before. Remember the AIM alliance? Remember Taligent? Remember Kaleida? I'll be more convinced when I see benchmarks showing that a Solaris system is out-streaming a G4.

You're missing the forest for the trees my friend.

Trust me on this: NO I AM NOT. period.

Does G2 beat QT4 on image quality? I'm still salivating over the quality of QT4 Star Wars download. Now I'm just waiting for the ADSL and video on demand.

AAPL has spent the last 15 years trying to convince people they have the better technology. They have 4% of the PC market to show for it. They have to do a better job of making partnerships work. To date, there's no evidence they can.

For $4K, you can buy a G3/monitor/Firewire video camera/Final Cut and create a *broadcast quality* video series entitles "Cesare Speaks".

For another $1K, you can buy OSX Server to broadcast/market the series from the same CPU.

That's it, no license fees to RNWK, etc.

Think that's not going to change the landscape?

Not by itself. Sorry, it just won't. This is APPLE we're talking about. They'll have to execute incredibly well and partner effectively. Maybe they will. I'll be watching.
