J.Y., for one thing the S&P is a market cap weighted index, and most of the increase the last year or so is attributable to a handful of stocks. I believe the index would be down YTD if you put an equal amount of dollars into each name. The RUT hasn't exactly been wowing the investment community with it's performance. The reality is that if you excluded a specific set of large cap names, shorting would have treated you much better at the dart board.

Why?

Your point is that in a random sample, more stocks are going up than down. That's wrong. The indexes are going up, most stocks are not.

Also, your point is the equivalent of saying that the Detroit Lions can beat any football team if the other team doesn't try.

People going long or short are not tossing darts, they are doing research and making educated decisions. If they are tossing darts, they aren't people, they are monkeys or sheeple.
