Dear Andmoreagain: These are The Real Issues to be sure. If you go back and read posting 3795[ #reply-8754627 ] you will notice the same questions asked in this thread, but nary a single reply to the fundamental business issues raised. What does this say?

Me thinks we might have become overly enamored with the technological sexyness of these services in absence of sound business fundamentals based on real need & demand. I saw these very issues ignored before in the wireless data industry (see the New York Times article "WIRELESS COMPUTING: Still Waiting for a Computing Vision to Materialize" at search.nytimes.com.

In the mobile satellite area, if history to valued as an indicator of future potential in this arena, today Inmarsat's Mini-M service with its $2-3/min airtime and $~3K subscriber sub-notebook/laptop sized equipment has around ~40K subs worldwide (after 3.5 years of operation) and is being marketed by 185 service providers around the world[ via-inmarsat.org ].

In North America (CA, US, MX, et al + surrounding coast lines), American Mobile Satellite Corp[ ammobile.com ], as of their FY98 results announced on March 4[ biz.yahoo.com ]said they have signed up a total of 13K subs since they initated their SkyCell service a few years ago.

Look for the next #'s on April 26th when Iridium releases its numbers for 1Q99.

Best regards,
