Firms identified to break Internet naming monopoly

April 21, 1999 09:13 AM
Since 1993, when the U.S. government decided it wanted to get out of the business of registering the names of new Internet sites, Network Solutions has been the only place to go for addresses ending with .com, .org or .net.

Network Solutions will still keep a master database of addresses but others will gradually be allowed to act as registrars. The first five are AOL, France Telecom's Oleane, Internet Counsel of Registrars, Melbourne IT and register.com.

"Today's announcement marks a major milestone in the joint efforts of the public and private sectors to bring Internet users the benefits of real competition in registration services," said Esther Dyson, the interim chairman of the not-for-profit Internet Corp.

Network Solutions recently charged $70 for registering an Internet address for an initial two-year period with annual updates priced at $35. Those price are expected to fall.
