OPINION

Compaq's Trigger Finger
-------------------------------------------------------
Anyone who has been around the Internet
for a while knows that Internet years are
even shorter than dog years. That's good
news for those individuals and companies
who have made overnight fortunes, but it
can be bad news for anyone whose performance
is judged by short-term rather than long-term
results. Take Eckhard Pfeiffer, who, on Sunday,
resigned as CEO of Compaq Computer. Was the
board short-sighted in forcing out a CEO that's
led the company through plenty of good times?
Larry Magid thinks both Pfeiffer's dismissal and
Compaq's come back are only a matter of timing.

Rosen's Balm
-------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps the most telling comment on the state
of the PC industry came from Compaq Chairman
Benjamin Rosen. When commenting on Eckhard
Pfeiffer's forced resignation, Rosen said, "As a
company engaged in transforming its industry for
the Internet era, we must have the organizational
flexibility necessary to move at Internet speed,
well ahead of the market at any moment." Phil Harvey
examines the internal struggles that led to Compaq's
executive reshuffle, in The Take.

Telecom Turbulence
-------------------------------------------------------
Throughout April, UpsideToday looks at what seem
like the biggest flubs in tech and declares the greater
fool. Today, Lisa Frantz checks in on the telecom
market three years after the 1996 Telecommunications
Act. Was it foolish to expect increased competition
and lower prices to be in full swing by now? Read on.

Qwest Digs Up Gold
-------------------------------------------------------
You might as well marry rich. Monday BellSouth
raised an eyebrow, showed a little willingness, if you
will. It raised its skirt so you could see a little lace from
its slip to profess affection for Qwest Communications'
long-distance telecom network business. In Baby Bell
terms, that punches the calculator to the clickety-clacking
of $3.5 billion. Tish Williams dissects the Qwest-BellSouth
union, a veritable match made in heaven.
