In any business, one has to deliver what the customers are looking for. If you have a computer in five colors, and customers want the "grape" but not the "orange", you have to react accordingly, or you'll lose.

Great observation. CPQ could transition by changing as many business processes as possible before the lane change from channel to direct. iMac needs a new process model also. These changes merely require radically new factories for a start. I don't think anyone sells new factories, you design them yourself.
