MB, re: " I think the key to holding up all tech innovation is Microsoft."
I think the other thing to keep in mind is market segments. There are PC's and then there are PC's.
When I think about cheap PC's I'm considering more those targeted at the internet. (The fastest growing market).
Even Microsoft has targeted this segment with CE, a cheap and soon to be cheaper OS. (Note they are going after China with a $200 set-top reference design).
You and I probably wouldn't want one, but the largest untapped segments may.
(And I see that Corel plans to introduce a cheap office suite targeted at low-end PC's).
Even WebTV has all the attributes of a PC. CPU, OS, memory, hard disk, modem and an infra-red K/B. (Heck, my DIVX player meets the requirements. And it also has a modem).
Three to four years is an eternity in this business, but it's fun to speculate. ;-)
