I went to Philadelphia for the Cezanne. First, I had so much familiarity from previous, smaller shows that it was no great revelation. Second, many of his masterpieces continued to hang in the National Gallery, the MOMA, and the Met, as I discovered on trips to each during that period. Third, it was organized to illustrate a theory of his development, and so scanted masterpieces for "developmentally significant" works. But finally, it was just too damn crowded!!!
