I found this on CBS Marketwatch (Reuters news @ 12:06pm) Verio Selected as Official Internet Domain Name Registrar PR Newswire - April 21, 1999 12:06 As a Member of the Shared Registry System, Verio Will Offer Expanded Domain Name Registration and Web-Hosting Services ENGLEWOOD, Colo., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Verio Inc. (Nasdaq: VRIO), the world's largest domain-based Web-hosting company and a leading supplier of business e-commerce services, today announced that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has selected Verio as an official registrar of Internet domain names. Verio will commence operations as an official registrar after the initial testbed phase of the Shared Registry System, which is expected to be completed by July 9, 1999. The announcement was made today during a press conference held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. As a member of the competitive Shared Registry System, Verio will serve as an official registrar of .com, .net and .org domain names worldwide. To date, Network Solutions Inc. (NSI) has served as the exclusive registrar of domain names. Verio, which currently hosts more than 330,000 Internet domains, enjoys a preferred-partner relationship with NSI. Because registering a domain is the primary entry point for developing a Web presence, domain registration services represent an important customer acquisition channel for Verio. To create an open, competitive system for domain registration services, ICANN developed the Shared Registry System, enabling accredited companies to serve as official registrars of top-level (.com, .net, .org) Internet domains. "We are thrilled that ICANN has selected Verio as a member of the Shared Registry System," said Herb Hribar, president and chief operating officer of Verio. "We believe that by opening up the domain registration process to competition, business customers will reap the benefits of increased innovation, greater options, and more affordable Internet services." Hribar added, "Verio expects to continue its close working relationship with NSI through this important transition period and beyond as NSI makes its technical and background data available to the expanded group of registrars." Glad I held on to all shares. :) Heather
