Ten,

don't mind shelling out extra bucks for a new motherboard based on new technology.

Compaq builds their own motherboards. There probably isn't a lot of difference in manufacturing cost between K7 and PIII systems.

Tenchusatu,

" It's aimed at those who demand high performance and don't mind
shelling out extra bucks for a new motherboard based on new technology"

Assuming you mean business customers and not hobbyists by your statement, even Compaq seems to have low expectations on AMD penetrating the Fortune-500 market before the end of the year because of Y2K concerns (I am not talking about ProSignia here; I remember reading quotes from Compaq marketing guys).

"AMD is also eyeing multiprocessor workstations and servers with the K7. Although Socket 7 can do multiprocessing, it really isn't that good at it."

If my understanding of Compaq's take on this is right, then the chances of K7 getting any volume out of multiprocessing business in 1999 seems to be low

"For the Socket 7 space, it's a sure bet that AMD will continue supporting it with the K6-III."

Jerry said the same thing during last quarters cc. The question is does it make sense and is AMD going to support K7 on socket 7.

You have probably summarized current expectations on where K7 is going. I am wondering if "current expectations" are the truth or if AMD is doing something different than what people are expecting it to do.
