Don, all i know is the old saw: 'sell in may and go away'. so probably may is a traditionally weak month. i know from a chart presented by j.bollinger on cnbc some time ago that the period from november to march is the seasonally strongest period in the market. october seems to enjoy a particularly bad reputation. there's also something mark twain once said about may being the worst month to buy stocks, followed by october,november,january,april,june...you get the picture.didn't think much of stocks.<g>

regards,

hb

I read in business week some years ago an article that showed
a bar graph of the average monthly performance of the S&P500
for the period from 1950 to 1996. I did not write down the numbers
but I did scratch a bar graph roughly on a sticky note. Here are
the "rough" results:

Jan ---------------------------
Feb ---
Mar ------------
Apr ----------------
May ---
Jun --
Jul -----------------
Aug ----
Sep Minus five dashes
Oct --
Nov -------------------
Dec -------------------------

The farther to the right the dashes go, the greater the percentage
increase for the month

Don,

According to 1995 "Stock Traders Almanac by Yale Hirsch", the worst month is Sept.(-.7%) followed by a tie between Feb, May, & June (+.1%). The best month is Dec. at + 1.8%. Data compiled January 1950 thru April 1994.

Reference the 1999 version of Stock Traders Almanac by Yale Hirsch.
" Between 1985 and 1997 May beat all other months, gaining a spectacular 43.3 %."

Prior to 1985 going back to 1964, the month of May was a very bearish month. For me, I will go with recent years statistics.
