Chuz -
"revenge of the channels" seems likely to me - let's see, CPQ pulls price protection down from 26 weeks to 4 weeks, completely demolishing the business model for many of those partners, then goes into competition with them, further putting the squeeze on. Not unreasonable for this to backfire even without a concerted effort by the channels.

But I think the Tandem and DEC Classic sales were also weak. Those are very high margin products so a small revenue drop has a big impact on profits.

Lots of evidence that the Compaq Classic server sales were very strong, and consumer sales were good. But something obviously happened to the profit out of the server sales on the road to the bottom line.

DEC should have contributed something like 25% of revenue, so the rest would seem to be actual growth in the "Classic" business.
