PCSS,
When they do it they have to do it in a manner that will SUPPORT CPQs stock price. If they just offer it as an IPO. Everyone will just forget about CPQ and buy Alta Vista. If they offer it to shareholders then people will buy Compaq just to get a shot at AV. For that matter Compaq could have several AV stock offerings in phases. Meanwhile CPQ can use the hype to increase their internet presence.
What happened two years ago was the internet took off. Dell, a direct marketer, took advantage of it and Compaq didn't.

Michael: Emotionally ... an AV spin-off/IPO in any way will be fantastic

Yes, but that "emotional" reaction isn't always good. Case in point -

techstocks.com

If all CPQ has in its bag of tricks is AV, this company is in BIG trouble. Maybe I don't get it, but I don't care that much about AV. I think it's more important for CPQ to focus on the "bigger CPQ picture" of which AV is only a small part. This stock ain't going nowhere until management has some "We're executing! YES!!!" news.

JMO,

K

$60++?? How long have you owned this stock? It will take months to turn things around after a new CEO is hired. I predict $35 tops by the end of 99; FOr new shareholders who bought Earls stock in the low $40s, it is cold comfort. Im out at $32...bought more DELL and WCOM. I will never touch this pig again...at any price. It ranks with the likes of AMD as one of the worst tech stocks.
