Lots of trades for 60 and change afterhours. One at 60 25/32 for 5000 shares. Now that's what I like to see.
As for the recent quietness, I think a rebound was expected, I'd like to see a slower, steady climb back to the high rather than the gut-churning volatility.

Alok, SUNW is just one of those companies that people like to whine about... "Bill gates will destroy you all" was the theme in 1996. Then everyone got in a big funk b/c insiders were selling their shares, like who wouldnt if you had that many shares. Then came the 1 quarter they had disappointing earnings (late 1997?), and people started to panic again...blah blah blah......
same ole story. In at 16 (split adjusted).

Interesting observations.

It's truly amazing (and unexpected) that I'm already significantly "in the black" on the shares I bought these past two days when things seemed "blackest." The volatility is brutal. Higher commissions and taxes in the past tended to dampen such swift moves.

I think comments are quicker and thicker on the downside because the emotions evoked are stronger. Most market participants are long, and fear tends to be more intense than greed. By the same token, drops in stock price tend to be quicker than rises (this week excepted).

Thanks for your concern. I'm not depressed, but sobered. Things will only get worse, IMHO, if trading hours are extended. I, too, worry about the malaise that's likely to set in once the earnings season is over. Traders are news junkies, and there likely just won't be as much news after we're past this season. Couple this with the acceptability of an "investing" style that focuses on minute-by-minute activity, and things could continue to be pretty volatile and unpredictable.

To an extent, even I (who try hard to keep a long-term perspective) have succumbed; I sold out of a significant position in BGP on Tuesday (and as it turned out seem to have dodged a bullet) simply because I was impatient that nothing was happening with it.

All JMHO.
