If there is a major shift to SiGe, ole Kope will feel the pressure.

IBM and Temic have both invested decades to get where they are today. Many would claim that SiGe still has a ways to go before it overtakes GaAs, which is undoubtedly true. Still, QUALCOMM is a visionary company, and they appear to have chosen the SiGe route.

This IBM Microelectronics "Technology Showcase" gives some background on SiGe from IBM's perspective:

The materials knowhow required to do SiGe is far beyond what can be transferred from experience with GaAs. RFMD is hedging their bet by partnering with IBM. That may be the only way to make the transition:
