Bill,

LU does not have a competing product to Juniper at this time. It would take years to develop one. If it were so easy to unseat Cisco in the routing space Bay Networks would not have lost market share every year that they have been in existence. LU had certainly better not wait for the likes of ERICY to do anything. They seem lost in the data space. NT has the customers and technology, but NT is a major competitor as well. Imo, Juniper would give LU a box that works in the core routing space that Cisco calls home. Owning this box would open up millions of dollars of other equipment sales that LU does not have at this time because CSCO has the backbone router. CSCO frowns on customers backing a product from a competitor up to one of their boxes if their is a CSCO product to do the job (frowns really loudly). LU would be able to provide end to end IP solutions with this technology and would have years worth of CSCO technology (from the founders of Juniper) with their name on it. None of this is to take away from the immense capabilities of LU, Bell Labs and Ascend. They can do serious damage. A core router that works, looks and smells like a CSCO router that is better than a CSCO router is an amazing asset to have. All in my opinion.
