Yes, he was emotional, i mentioned that. But he said those peculiar things, not only the mention of hearts and minds. N. was watching with me, and we looked at each other in incredulity -- but I guess I could also be convinced that it was just a complete insensitivity to the nuances of language. I'm going to try to see it again tonight. I would expect it to be on Chris Matthews, for example. Just because it was so strange.

Joan,
Once for part of a day I was a cub reporter on the police beat for the Chicago Daily News in 1952. An old timer turned me out and took me to the Central Police Station. There we saw the cops beating up their latest arrests with clubs. I asked him how the cops could be stopped. He said they couldn't be stopped. I asked him what kind of stories our editors expected. Could we tell the truth? He said no way. It wouldn't do any good. And the cops would turn on us. The other reporters laughed at me. It was like a scene from Front Page. The TV cameramen never show the scenes they take that show the real cruelty and horror of life. It wouldn't do any good.
