What was truly impressive was his ability to engineer the ouster of cofounder Rod Canion. But giving him any credit for the PC industry taking off during this period is plain nutty - and if I didn't know you any better, I would have thought this pathologically deceitful.

IMO you could have been CEO at Compaq during this period and Compaq would have seen the same growth. The board of directors probably looked at a more meaningful comparison of how effective he was during this period - Compaq's performance vis a vis Dell:
