Ladies and Gentlemen: I am back, as of Sunday evening. As usual, the school trip that I chaperoned was disorganized and grueling, and I was a wreck upon my return, but also as usual the kids were great and I was glad to have participated. I awoke before dawn, due to aches and pains, and tried to respond, but the server wouldn't let me.
I have been taking my son to New York since the end of first grade. We used to stay at the Empire Hotel, across from Lincoln Center, and before we would wrap it up in the evening, we would walk around the plaza, where there was usually a dance band playing. On Thursday, my son sang on that same plaza, by the fountain, with his school chorus. As I stood there, I had a vision of taking him around for the first time, holding his hand as we ducked into Avery Fisher Hall to look around. That, in a nutshell, is how my trip was...
