The academics seem to base their pontifications on a careful selection of reports from the sources we discussed earlier, ensuring that the distortions will be exponentially multiplied. Oddly, because they are at a distance, their thoughts are sometimes given greater credence; they are thought to have "perspective", wanting in those on the spot. I was thoroughly and consistently amazed at seeing journalistic superstars, who a few days before would have had trouble finding this country on a map, descending like buzzards and instantly becoming "experts", regurgitating fragments of their briefing documents. I got the feeling that they spent as much time practicing grave and concerned expressions as studying the subject matter, and that gravitas in presentation counted for more than content.

To slip another of my pet peeves into the discussion, consultants working on development projects display many of the same symptoms, the difference being that many millions of other people's dollars are often disposed of on the basis of their opinions.

Of course the two of us are the only ones who know what is really going on....
