*Blue Water Sailors* Yes DF, many vessels will want complete converage. They'll be able to get that cheaper from ICO or GEO systems or their existing radio systems. They'll need to keep their existing radio systems for marine monitoring - standard emergency channels always open for example. Maybe Wireless Business Solutions will provide the OmniTRACS service as the best system for some. For intermittent calls, rather than yakking for fun, existing radio is pretty good.

I agree, people won't be waiting 10 years for Globalstar to cover everywhere, but there are plenty of options other than Iridium. Yes, Iridium has advantages, such as a handset they can ashore, use at home and things like that. It's a question of total benefits versus costs compared with other options.

The small area of ocean that won't be covered in 10 years would be South East Pacific, South Atlantic, South Indian and those gaps would be trivial because gateways in Chile, Peru and Tahiti would nearly cover all the South East Pacific. Similarly, nearly all the Atlantic and Indian oceans would be covered.
