Central Europe clears path to the battle zone

<< The Czech and Slovak governments said last night that Nato military trains would begin using a new land bridge from Germany to Hungary within days.

Immediately after the Slovak government accepted Nato's request to ship troops, equipment and munitions across its territory, the foreign minister, Eduard Kukan, said a 36-wagon train carrying armoured vehicles was expected to cross Slovakia en route for Hungary last night. His Czech counterpart, Jan Kaven, said later that the trains would not begin running until the weekend.

Czech press reports suggested the equipment was American, and from bases in Germany. Troops could follow by air, or on additional trains. One Czech press report said America had asked the Czechs to prepare for the possible trans-shipment of two armoured divisions en route to Hungary. >>
