I wouldn't worry about Maffei leaving

I agree with you and t2 that this isn't so bad -- especially since he's leaving to run a company in which Microsoft is a partner. But I do worry a bit about perception. Microsoft has lost a few high profile executives recently, notably Higgins and Silverberg (who is back only part time). They still haven't hired the high-profile media person they apparently want for the Consumer division. Maffei's departure will probably lead to a few stories asking if things are in disarray.

Oh, and ATHM + RR? The FTC is unlikely allow it. If it did get by that hurdle, then the merged companies could count on an FCC reversal of its hands-off policy.

Hmm... That RoadRunner/ATHM consolidation you mentioned might come in a way I never expected to see. AT&T, the major owner of ATHM, is now making a counter-offer to buy MediaOne, one of the two major partners in RoadRunner. It will be amazing to see how they handle that. (My guess: rather than merging the two, AT&T will agree to let Comcast take over MediaOne's RR interest and shift MediaOne to @home.)
