If you have income from which no withholding is taken, and you owe tax for the quarter, you have to pay for the quarter. You can't wait until April 15. I get money in sporadically, sometimes my overhead exceeds my income for the first half of the year, so I don't have to pay the first couple of quarters, for instance. There is a form you fill out where you detail it, that gets you out of the penalty stuff.
