Sub-$1000 Alpha Linux system close to launch

The first fruits of Eckhard Pfeiffer's removal as CEO of Compaq have started to fall off the
tree.

Compaq has now decided that its idea to make NT only ProLiant Alpha servers was not a
good idea. Alpha is now being touted by the company as a so-called "universal platform".

Next month, Compaq will introduce its DS10 WebBrick at around $3,500 for a 64Mb
system, running Linux, according to Terry Shannon, editor of Shannon knows Compaq.

But better still, Alpha Processor Inc will introduce a sub-$1,000 Alpha-Linux system in the
next few weeks. ®

All Qt on the Western Front
By Sam Williams
April 28, 1999

As winter gradually gives way to spring, a carpet of fresh grass covers the charred earth of the Linux landscape.

Things seem peaceful now. The Gnome project is finally out of beta. The KDE folks are basking in the glory of their recent "Innovation of the Year" award at Germany's CeBIT conference, the world's largest computer fair. Both sides of last year's famous "GUI schism" have once again beat their e-mail servers into plowshares, as the rivals in the latest high-tech holy war to end all holy wars are instead working to reap a bumper crop of new Linux users this fall.
