Voice of Neimoidians
Wed, Apr 21, 99 08:48:08 AM CST

BC sent the following:

I came across something in the local Marin County (where Skywalker Ranch resides) newspaper last Sunday that seemed of interest - at least I haven't seen anything about it on the web yet.
The IJ (name of paper) has been running a story about TPM every Sunday for the past 3 weeks that features a local person working on the movie. Until last Sunday, I hadn't seen anything in these articles about the movie that seemed new.

Last Sunday's article was about a guy named Matt Wood who works with Ben Burtt on the sound effects. There was a bit about the Neimoidians that seemed interesting. Here's a quote from the article:

"At times, their work led Wood and Burtt to even more exotic realms.

"Take the Neimoidians - a mythical species with reddish eyes and greenish-gray skin whose representatives play a prominent role in Episode 1. "In the film, the actors who play the Neimoidians are British. ""For the longest time, we hadn't figured out what we were going to use for the sound of the Neimoidians,' says Wood. "We tried all different things. Then one day we were working on the Thai version of the trailer and we heard these voices that were very unique. So Ben and I went to L.A. and (recorded) Thai people trying to speak the lines as best they could in their best English.' "In the end, Burtt found the sound he wanted - English actors interpreting a Thai person trying to speak English, Wood says.

You can read the entire article on the IJ web site: marinij.com But it may only be online for a few more days (it's in the Week in Review section).

Duel of the Fates Confirmation
Thu, Apr 22, 99 08:21:33 AM CST

We were able to confirm from a totally separate, reliable source that radio stations will be getting the "Duel of the Fates" single on April 26th via satellite broadcast. We're still getting clarification on if it will be broadcast on the 26th or 27th, but our previous informant says it is the 27th.

We don't know which of your local stations it will be playing on. Sorry! Plus, it would be a pain to list them all. You're just going to have to call your local radio stations or e-mail them and ask yourselves. But it will be playing on a wide variety of stations, so start with your favorites first.

The Onion has a hilarious spoof article about Bill Clinton standing in line for Episode I:

"Should a major crisis arise, whether regarding the situation in Kosovo or anywhere else, I can be reached at my place in line by cell phone," Clinton said. "But I have urged my advisors only to contact me if absolutely necessary. I would also urge Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic to follow the example of the Jedi Knights and use his powers only for knowledge and defense, never for attack." Added Clinton: "Wars not make one great."
"I would urge all Americans to withhold judgment on the Jar-Jar issue until they have seen the film. After all, Yoda talked like Grover, and he is one of the great characters in the Star Wars pantheon," Clinton said. "As long as Phantom Menace doesn't have those stupid teddy bears in it, I don't care."

Several readers have also alerted us to an amazing secret discovery in the trailers at brunching.com. Check them both out!

EPISODE I: Wal-Mart loading up for Star Wars

Wal-Mart Stores, the nation's biggest retailer, has placed an order for “Star Wars” merchandise that sources estimate to be worth in excess of $500 million retail.

The single order dwarfs any of its kind for movie-based merchandise.

Previous theatrical releases on the scale of, say, “Jurassic Park,” have done well, generating total retail sales of around $1 billion.

Wal-Mart's move could be taking “Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace” half-way to this retail benchmark all by itself; and this order is designed to see it through just the remainder of this year.

The Bentonville, Ark.-based discount chain, which didn't return calls for comment, previously reported that “Star Wars” goods, ranging from snacks to toiletries, would appear in 16 of its 36 departments.

The order, worth about $250 million at wholesale, is estimated to return a cool $50 million to Lucas Licensing, even before its Lucasfilm counterpart puts the movie up on the screen May 19. But then, the licensing program also will start paying off before the film bows. Director George Lucas is allowing retail outlets to begin stocking “Star Wars” items May 2 for sale the following day.
