<From Nokias GREAT earnings report> Nokia Mobile Phones sales volumes exceeded market growth in all regions and were especially strong in Asia Pacific and in the Americas. The growth of the global mobile phone market continued to be driven by the increasing number of new subscribers and by existing mobile phone users upgrading to newer models. Overall, the upgrade market now exceeds 40%. Digital standards continued to gain ground. In the Americas, the share of digital sales exceeded 70%. Preliminary market information suggests that approximately 75% of the global subscriber base is now digital. At Nokia, digital sales represented 87% of the total volume of mobile phones sold in the first quarter. Growth of the world's biggest standard GSM continued, now representing over 55% of digital mobile phones sold worldwide. However, in the first quarter, market volume growth was fastest within CDMA and TDMA. Nokia introduced several new mobile phones for the American markets. In March, Nokia introduced the Nokia 3210 dual band GSM 900/1800 mobile phone that can be customized with the Nokia Xpress-On front and back covers. The new phone contains an internal antenna and is smaller and slimmer than the popular Nokia 5110. It also offers a number of new features, including picture messaging, which allows users to send short messages together with graphical icons, and predictive text input that enables users to type text messages with greater speed and convenience. The Nokia 3210 is expected to be available in the second quarter. Nokia also introduced the Nokia 6090, a new powerful car phone for professional use, designed to give the best possible signal and clear reception within GSM 900 networks. Continuing to build the market recognition for its multimedia terminals, Nokia broadened its multimedia terminal business into new markets with new operators.
