The trench coat kid at my son's school started wearing it on a regular basis a couple months ago according to my son. It was taken care of simply. The parents took him home, changed him into a regular short jacket and he returned that afternoon with no problems. Guess what? The parents actually thanked the school principle for letting them know what was going on and they explained to their son why it was not acceptable that day. Imagine that -- the parents thanking the school for letting them know what their son was up to. They were totally unaware of what he was doing.

We have become so consumed by providing a better life for our children with the home in the suburbs that we have disconnected from them in many cases and made their lives worse, not better. At least that seems to be the message these kids in Littleton were trying to send.

The school maintains a policy that it has the right to remove any student that is not dressed appropriately according to community standards of decency and respect. In this case, the dress mode was creating fear and clearly not acceptable. He will not be suing the school.
