That's even worse. Hiding under conspiracy is the weakest form of rationalization.

Barrick hedges because they have an image to protect. Part of the image is to show positive earnings and to pay a nominal dividend. This is a manipulation in order to keep institutions long. I guess they believe the shares are priced based on institutional buying and selling, so they have to structure company strategy along the demands of Madison Ave. Thus Barrick is useless as a good gains vehicle.

You don't buy gold stocks because gold mining companies are skilled at bringing it to the bottom line. You buy them because the currency is being undermined. Therefore, you need a clean play. Otherwise forget gold mine stocks. They're perennial dogs. You speculate and then you get out since eventually the monetary authority changes back to discipline over the objections of the public.
