I'm with Jim on his point: If we didn't have to work like dogs to pay the taxes, if one breadwinner could support the family, if the Mom (or even the Dad, for that matter - I'm not partial to housewives over househusbands) could be at home, there would be opportunity for nurturing that goes far beyond what America has in many homes today, (viz. both parents working, or single parent) and an opportunity for normalcy that goes far beyond what any gun locks, metal-detector-protected schools, or whatever other mandated programs might accomplish.
