AirTouch adds 1M subs during quarter

SAN FRANCISCO—AirTouch Communications Inc. said its earnings
during the first quarter increased 68 percent to $257 million, or 43 cents
per share, compared with net income of $153 million, or 30 cents per
share, during the same quarter last year.

Revenues totaled $2.1 billion, up 27 percent from revenues of $1.7 billion
during last year's first quarter.

AirTouch said its strong results were driven by its international operations,
which had 84 percent subscriber growth, 55 percent higher revenues and
55 percent greater operating cash flow. The company said this quarter is
its third-best ever for international subscriber additions, despite a history of
seasonal declines during the first quarter.

The company said it added nearly 1.1 million proportionate subscribers,
including 719,000 outside the United States. AirTouch's subscriber base
totals more than 18.8 million proportionate subscribers.

In the United States, AirTouch said digital cellular subscribers accounted
for 57 percent of first-quarter net additions and represent 17 percent of its
cellular subscriber base.

Besides its merger agreement with U.K.-based Vodafone Group plc,
AirTouch also announced during the quarter it increased its ownership
stakes in Omnitel Pronto Italia to 17.8 percent and in South Korea's
Shinsegi Telecomm Inc. to 11.4 percent.
