SAN JOSE --Ultratech Stepper Inc. today reported a first-quarter net
loss $2.5 million, or $0.12 per share (diluted), on relatively flat
revenues of $25.8 million versus $27.8 million in the first quarter of
1998. In that year-ago period, the company had a slight profit of
$361,000.

However, the first quarter's revenues were 31% higher than in the
fourth quarter of 1998, when Ultratech took in $18.9 million.

"Ultratech's first-quarter results benefited from improved system
sales to the semiconductor industry," said Arthur W. Zafiropoulo,
Ultratech's president and CEO. "In addition, we experienced a solid
quarter of bookings from the thin-film head industry, especially in
back-end processes. We believe that several of our served markets
may be emerging from their prolonged cyclical downturn, and believe
we are well positioned, both in terms of our product offerings and our
financial position, to meet our customers' needs."
