On April 15, NTT Cyber Communication Institute revealed development of the MPEG -2 Real Time Video Encoder PC Card, the world's first video encoder for mobile-oriented notebook PCs. The institute combined a proprietary MPEG -2 encoding LSI with a newly-developed PC card control LSI to successfully squeeze the size of the chip to that of a 5 mm-thick business card.

The stock price did respond to the announcement of the Phillips STB win. Then uncertainty was raised when it was speculated that Comcast might ditch MediaOne's "open standard" architecture. What would be AT&T/TCI's attitude toward MediaOne's STB technology?
