Some other news today: Road Runner tries to snag Microsoft's Maffei

Greg Maffei, Microsoft's chief financial officer, is being recruited to become chief executive officer at Road Runner, the high-speed Internet service owned by Time Warner and MediaOne Group, according to reports.

People familiar with the situation told the Wall Street Journal that Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is unhappy about the prospect of losing Maffei, though having a former top financial executive at Road Runner would strengthen Microsoft's links to the Internet.

Gates is resisting the proposal and may seek various concessions from Road Runner before consenting to Maffei's departure; as a minority investor in the company, Microsoft has veto rights over the appointment of its first chief executive, the newspaper reported....<<
