Well in Canada we have strict gun control, and yes there still are the odd illegal hand guns but for the most part our violent homicide numbers here in Toronto are very good compared to U.S. cities: for a population of ~5 million (including suburbs) we only have around 200 violent homicides a year (only half of which are gun related).

I think the homicide rate in some large U.S. cities is in the order of the thousands; with the bulk being gun related ?

Probably is related to gun control but there could be other factors?
