Re: Conclusive proof that ABFG's 3-D internet mall is a pipedream By: DMAX Reply To: 5977 by cypress Thursday, 22 Apr 1999 at 8:39 PM EDT Post #5985 of 5991 Want a profile....Here goes...ONLY BECAUSE OF CYPRESS' gentle and intelligent approach. I think everyone here is probably missing an opportunity to hear why I've been hanging around so much. So here goes, and maybe I can contribute a little more than I've allowed myself to. As of yet no one has asked me what kind of production I do. Well, I am the 3D digital content creation industry. Thus the 3D-MAX acronym. I have had sub-contracts with DD (Digital Domain), Pacifc Data Images, and Pixar (In the middle of post-production for Toy-story 2). In the middle of getting heavily involved in global illumination, or Radiosity, that's kind of the next step in animation. That's hyper-realistic modeling and animation! For those who are not in the industry. (If you want to test me or quiz me on the subject, let it pour, we can do this one more time). I began posting while in the middle of a post production job for a commercial that requires some 3D animation. In particular, Lightscape. 3D ANIMATION IS MY WORLD!. I LIVE IT, I BREATH IT, I SLEEP IT, I LOVE IT. IT IS MY LIFE!! And that is where my interest in ABFG came from. My major TECHNICAL concern with this company stems from their lofty ideas about providing a fully emersive 3d environment where by we can all shop until we drop. Frankly after being in the industry for some time, I can tell you THAT IT IS A LONG SHOT AT BEST!!!!!. We are just not there yet with the bandwidth people. And the requirements for just one simple environment (ONE ROOM) with simple texture mapping (that's materials) is an overly ambitious task for any one small company to undertake within the confines of the internet. Not to mention providing adequate lighting simulations in the scenes. BY GOD, THE VRML WORLD HAS LEFT MUCH TO BE DESIRED. FRANKLY, I THINK THAT THIS COMPANY IS MANY MANY MANY YEARS AWAY FROM THEIR GOALS IN THE 3D ARENA. BUT FRANKLY SO ARE ALL THE OTHER PLAYERS. JUST ASK ANYONE IN THE INDUSTRY. IF you look at what they have provided thus far is .AVI files streamed off the internet. Anyone can do that! And it is a fully rendered and one-way animanted non-emersive non-interactive environment. It's like me showing you the keys to your brand new car, but telling you that the engine will be in from the assembly line in 10 years. It's a hard sell and unless you are in the industry YOU WOULD NOT KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR. THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT I TALKED TO KELLEY, AND HE COULD NOT ANSWER ANY OF MY QUESTIONS REGARDING THE ENGINE THAT WILL DRIVE THE PUPPY!!!! He could not even give me an honest answer as to how this company is going about producing the environments on a stand-alone network, let alone the internet. Just because they have shown you an animation does not mean it is IN REAL TIME. DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG IT TAKES TO RENDER A SCENE. At 30 frames per second for standard decent quality frame rate, it takes about 20minutes to 1hour to render one image. If it is a fully emersive environment, and you have Silicon Graphics machines doing your job you still have the problem of piping it throught the internet. THE BANDWIDTH IS JUST NOT THERE, PEOPLE. AND KELLEY AND FRIENDS CAN'T SEEM TO ANSWER ANY OF MY BASIC QUESTIONS. I APOLOGIZE FOR BEING SO LONG-WINDED AND ALL THE TYPOS AND MISSPELLINGS. THERE ARE MY FULL AND COMPLETE 2 CENTS WORTH. If anyone has any comments I will be on for all night working on a project. By the way, I just don't sit here and post all day and not get work done.
