CommSatMan:

Your comment: A ten year design life at 1440 Km is difficult to achieve because of the effects of radiation on electronic components. " misses the point. I was attempting to illustrate that in order to produce a satellite to support a customer's "fully operational 7.5 year minimum" requirement, that the builders would include some fudge factors. With statistics and all that wonderful stuff, in order to get a high degree of probability that most of the sats would work 7.5 years, the average life would be more like 10. (my wag)

That design effort results in a 10 year life span, not a 10 yr design life. A 10 year design life puts the actual life out further (pick your number) because of the need to ensure the minimum.

As to the rest of your comments, I will take them at face value. You would not happen to work the quality side of a integration contractor house would you? Sounds like it to me.
