Claude -

Internally NCR is migrating all their Oracle Applications to Sun Hardware. This is a fact and indicative that the PC Platform scales better in peoples imagination than in the data center - gee boss, we lost all the data, the PC er.. PC Platform crashed!

NCR is getting out of the box business and has outsourced production of their hardware but still put the NCR label on them - its becoming less and less an important part of their business. If their Intel based hardware was so good they wouldnt be writing a check to Sun to buy their servers.

as far as your claim that you have seen dual pentium data warehouses serving 3-400 concurrent users - your mistaken. Databases like Terradata, Oracle and Informix cant run more than a few multiple queries streams at any one time without choking.

Missed responding to you on this one; all excellent points.

Regarding Sun moving ahead on software I refer you to this post:
Message 9236415

For Sun to address the PC NT/Linux invasion they need to reduce margins on their workstations now. This will at least make them price competitive to PC's. They also need to bundle/address the office desktop suite of products that UNIX currently lacks. Java office suites are starting to appear but they are in their infancy compared to MS Office. Then maybe jazz up the presentation and marketing (like iMac) somehow to appeal to the masses; look what Apple has done over the last year.
