>>Hey, no Guido jokes. One of my brothers in Chicago is named Guido, the other is Silvio. (Of course I am Antonio.) :) << Well I could tell you who I am but then I would have to flash that thingy at you and fry a few brain cells. This just hit me.. usually I aint too bright, after having the thingy flashed at me during testing so many times. (DAYTRADER) Some of the Internet's biggest names are due to release quarterly results next week. Starting the week off will be online auctioneer eBay (EBAY), followed by America Online (AOL) on Tuesday and Amazon.com (AMZN) on Wednesday. As the table shows, each of these companies exceeded Wall Street expectations last quarter, and are generally expected to do the same this quarter. And as the "Closing Prices" column demonstrates, each of the stocks (excluding MindSpring), rallied following the release of fiscal Q4 numbers. MindSpring did, however, rise 7 points the day before earnings were released. (The "Closing Price" data are based on closing quotes on the day before earnings were released, the day of earnings and the day after earnings were reported. Watching the price action in shares of CNET Inc (CNET 143 3/4 +24) and Go2Net (GNET 184 3/4 +7 1/4) over the past two sessions reminds us to remind our readers just how important it is to anticipate events. Yesterday, CNET and GNET rallied 14 1/4 points and 29 3/8 points respectively, as traders positioned themselves in the stocks ahead of the report of quarterly results. Those who held overnight got a quick ride of 35 1/4 points on CNET and 21 1/2 points on GNET, before profit-taking hit. Those individuals who did not purchase the stock until this morning weren't able to get in until $148 11/16 and $196 7/8 (opening prices) and, if still holding, have possibly seen their positions fall under water... While it is impossible to predict when a company will receive an upgrade or issue a press release that will ignite a run in the stock, it doesn't take much leg work to find out when a company is due to report earnings --one need only make a visit to Briefing.com's Tech Earnings Calendar. There was certainly no guarantee that either CNET or GNET would report blow-out quarterly results, but as Briefing.com's Earnings Calendar Archives show, both companies have a recent history of dramatically exceeding Wall Street estimates (archives available to Briefing.com subscribers). Throw in the fact that both stocks were trading at a level which might trigger management to announce stock splits, not hard to imagine why traders were piling into the two stocks yesterday.... Other events which one can anticipate that often ignite rallies in Internet stocks are: the initiation of coverage of a company following its IPO (usually 30 days after IPO is completed), the actual execution of a stock split (readers can find split dates on the Briefing.com Upcoming Splits page), the upcoming IPO of an Internet play (companies which hold large positions in these IPOs are usually bid up sharply based on potential value of their equity stake).
